Self-taught essentially means having acquired some knowledge or skill on one’s own initiative, rather than through formal instruction or training. One example could be watching YouTube videos to learn how to digitally process photographs, but even though that’s not exactly ‘formal’ education, it’s not being self-taught in our eyes, because you’re learning from the individual who created the video. Now let’s look at a different example. If someone learns to play the guitar by listening to music and watching their favourite rock star on TV, then they will have acquired the knowledge on their own initiative, learning the rhythm of the song patiently whilst practising over and over again. We feel the term is too loose these days, and if you learn something from YouTube or any other online tutorial, it’s not a case of you ‘ self-teaching’ yourself. What do you think?
