Building Your MSc. Study Programme

The choice of modules taken by a particular student is tailored specifically to meet the needs of that individual. Students can select from a range of purely technical subjects, or balance the computing elements with management skills.

The school has two masters programmes available in modular form, the MSc in Advanced Computer Science and the MSc in Advanced Computer Science and IT Management.

Masters programmes are made up of two parts - a taught part and a research project part:

Taught Modules

The part-time modular MSc is normally completed over a three to four year period. Students are required to complete 90 credits of taught course units, each comprising of attendance one day a week for five weeks at the University, in conjunction with any post-course work.

Research Project

The credits for the research component of the programme are split into two blocks of work. The first block is worth 30 credits and includes assessment of the Preliminary Project Report. The second block is the research project itself and is assessed by submission of a dissertation worth 60 credits. Industrially based students have a choice of carrying out a work based project or selecting one of the individual projects designed by members of staff. Students wishing to carry out work based projects will work on the project with both an industrial and an academic supervisor.

In conjunction with the course director each student will develop their own study programme to fit the time commitment they are able to allocate.

Alternative Options

Students can study within the postgraduate school even if they do not feel able to commit to the full MSc, three alternatives are available:

  • A Postgraduate Diploma can be obtained by completion of 90 credits of taught course units, followed by a mini-project (30 credits) or for some programmes the completion of 120 credits of taught course units.
  • A Postgraduate Certificate can be obtained by completion of 60 credits of taught course units.
  • Take individual course units as discussed on our page about Studying Individual Post-Graduate Modules.

Students can upgrade, or downgrade the qualifications for which they are registered in consultation with academic advisors
